Bowes occurs as village in the Pennines of England, situated around Barnard Castle.

These are traditionally located in the North Riding of Yorkshire but along with a rest of the previous Startforth Rural District it was transferred to County Durham for administrative and ceremonial purposes on One April 1974, under a provisions of the Local Government Act 1972.

A A66 and A67 roads meet at Bowes.
